Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds

Rock, R&B/Soul, Funk
Sister Sparrow and The Dirty Birds is a nine-piece powerhouse from Brooklyn, formed in 2008, that delivers a blend of gut-busting soul, earthy rock, and New Orleans-inspired beats. Their newest effort is 'Pound of Dirt,' an album title taken from an old American proverb, "You gotta eat a pound of dirt before you die," which exemplifies their gritty philosophy. Says frontwoman Arleigh Kincheloe, "That lyric sums up our new record...which is how we’ve always wanted to present ourselves to the world.”

JD McPherson
With JP Harris
Country, Rock, Blues
From the Tulsa suburb of Broken Arrow, OK, JD McPherson and his ace band (Jimmy Sutton on bass, Doug Corcoran on guitar/sax, Ray Jacildo on keyboards, Jason Smay on drums) have generated a buzz and an energy not seen around a roots-based rock'n'roll band since the early days of The Blasters, in the early 1980s. McPherson, who grew up on a cattle ranch outside Tulsa and studied film and art in college, absorbed early rock'n'roll and R&B the way a sponge soaks up water, and then threw punk into the mix as well. Being fired from teaching middle-school art in Tulsa for having the audacity to play Bad Brains for his students freed him to work on his debut album, 2012's "Signs and Signifiers," with the signature tune "North Side Gal" as an exclamation point. Following much word-of-mouth, he and the band set to album No. 2, the critically acclaimed "Let the Good Times Roll," a 2015 release.

Durand Jones & The Indications

R&B/Soul
Bayou-born soul sensation, Durand Jones got his start in the church, after being forced to sing in the choir of his rural hometown Hillaryville, Louisiana because his Grandmother thought he sang too much at home. When his music career took him to Bloomington, Indiana, he was selected to join the legendary Indiana University Soul Revue, and it was through his involvement that he met writer/producer duo Aaron Frazer and Blake Rhein. The three began writing original soul music, recording themselves straight to tape in the basements of Bloomington. That rowdy band unfolded into the Indications (with bassman Kyle Houpt, and organist Justin Hubler).

The Lemonheads
With Tommy Stinson
Rock, Alternative
The Lemonheads' evolution from post-Hüsker Dü hardcore punk rockers to teenage heartthrobs is one of the strangest sagas in alternative music. Initially, the group was a punk-pop trio formed by three teenage Boston suburbanites, but over the years, the band became a vehicle for Evan Dando. Blessed with good looks and a warm, sweet voice, Dando became a teen idol in the early '90s, when Nirvana's success made alternative bands commercially viable. While his simple, catchy songs were instantly accessible, they tended to hide the more subversive nature of his lyrics, as well as his gift for offbeat covers and his devotion to country-rock father Gram Parsons.

Pete Yorn

Rock, Pop
Much of Pete Yorn's appeal is his down-to-earth vibe: He's cool enough for the indie crowd, tuneful enough for more mature listeners and he rocks enough to keep things interesting. His lyrics are clever but not cute and his voice conveys an earnest quality that never sounds forced or canned.

The Teskey Brothers

R&B/Soul
Sam and Josh Teskey discovered American soul music of the 1960’s via their parents’ record collection and were immediately taken. As teenagers, the two brothers jammed night after night in the bungalow behind their family home on the outskirts of Melbourne, devouring the R&B songbook and absorbing the tricks of the blues trade. In their obsession, the pair became accomplished players and soon began writing originals; a process which came naturally to both of them.
